When it comes to advances in dental technology, the profession has grown by "leaps and bounds" over the past 15 to 20 years, says Biraj Patel, BDS, a board-certified endodontist, global lecturer, and researcher. Patel, who has worked in restorative dentistry and received specialist training in endodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, points out that among the key changes he has noticed are in file metallurgies, which have improved the predictability and management of complex cases, along with the advent of endodontic sealers.
Patel speaks particularly highly of the EdgeOne Blaze Utopia™ file reciprocating system from EdgeEndo. Delivering enhanced reciprocating technology, the system features EdgeEndo's FireWire™ Blaze Heat-Treatment, which enhances efficiency, safety, and flexibility. Additionally, the pre-sterilized instruments have an S-shaped cross-section for increased debris removal.
"The EdgeOne Blaze is a great reciprocating system for most cases," Patel suggests. "It can even be used in retreatment for removal of gutta percha. The cutting efficiency is very good, and it just makes cases very quick and improves workflow. It'll be great for general dentists as well. For routine cases, it's really efficient."
Patel notes how the unique heat-treated design of the EdgeOne Blaze improves its performance and longevity compared to other files he's used. "The metallurgy of it is a little more martensitic than other files available, so it has a higher cyclic fatigue resistance and does not break or fracture as much," he explains. "The smaller size of the primary file is very nice. It helps if you're trying to be a little bit more conservative with using reciprocating files. The EdgeOne Blaze just has a nice feel and flexibility. It holds up very well for complicated cases."
Featuring an enhanced fit handle with a reduced length for increased posterior access, and ISO color coding, the EdgeOne Blaze Utopia single shaping file reciprocating system shapes canals in a reverse reciprocating motion. Patel likes how it operates in terms of safety and functionality. "It's highly flexible and resistant to separation and fracture," he says. "I think the Blaze manages curvature better than other reciprocating files."
"Also, the S-shaped cross-section really helps with shaping and cleaning and improving the debris removal," Patel adds. "There's no variation from one file to the next within the system, and you can sense the premium quality of the files. I think for most cases the system improves the speed at which I can get down canal and the speed of shaping."
Patel sums up his experience with the EdgeOne Blaze Utopia: "It's a really nice file, and it's definitely a file system you'll want to have if you're using a reciprocating system. For a general dentist, the Blaze is ideal."
