A new study led by Michael A. Daneshvar, MD, a urologist at UCI Health, suggests that adults with cannabis dependence may face significantly higher risks of developing bladder, kidney, and prostate cancers. The research found a 4.2-fold increased risk of bladder cancer, 3.7-fold for kidney cancer, and 2.8-fold for prostate cancer compared to non-users.
Daneshvar emphasizes the need for further independent research to explore the dose-dependent effects and potential cancer-causing properties of cannabinoids. As cannabis use continues to rise, the study urges healthcare providers to consider these risks when advising patients.
